High speed chases on the open sea,
flights into hostile territories to pluck civilians from the clutches of
doom. . . . In Japan's new reality, the Self-Defense
Forces seem to be gaining unprecedented momentum and a new sense of
prestige. For the past several decades, in fact, the country has been on
a slow but steady course toward remilitarization -- largely at the prompting
of the United States -- and at the end of this month, the country will
likely take a great leap forward along this course, thanks to the passage
of a controversial set of bills through the National
