生命に対する特許をめぐる問題: こ れまで世界中のほぼすべての文化・宗教において、神からの神聖なる贈りものとして扱われてきた生命は、いまや人間の「創造物」として扱われるようになり つつあります。つまり、遺伝子や化学物質などが、遺伝子工学技術を使って組み換えたり、特許取得者が売買したりする対象になっているのです。企業は生物 を、利益のために好き勝手に乱用してもよい物品とみなしています。いま、生命の多様性は、これまでにない大きな危機にさらされています。私たち人間の生活 に欠かすことのできない食品や医薬品などが次つぎと、種子の遺伝子や病気の原因遺伝子などの特許奪取に奔走している、数社の巨大企業の支配下におかれるよ うになってきています。たとえばある企業が、エイズのような病気を引き起こす遺伝子を分離し、病気に対する治療法の開発に成功した場合、その企業は巨額の 利益を得ることになります。生命に対する特許は、環境、健康、農業、南北問題、バイオテクノロジーなどをめぐる問題に関心を寄せる人々にとって、憂慮すべ き新たな問題となっています.

Some Questions Raised by the Patenting of Life:  Life, once considered sacred and a gift from God in almost all religions and cultures, is now treated as a human invention. Life is now a collection of chemicals and genes that can be engineered and bought and sold. The corporate mentality sees living organisms as commodities to be exploited for profit. The diversity of life is under threat as never before. Vital human needs, such as food and medicine, are increasingly under the control of a few corporations which are rushing to patent the genes of seeds and genes that cause disease. If a corporation can isolate the genes that cause diseases like AIDS, for example, and then develop a treatment for the disease, the corporation stands to make lots of money. The patenting of living organisms raises new questions for people concerned about the environment, health, agriculture, North-South issues and biotechnology.
