Moncada is chair of the history department at Central University of Venezuela in Caracas. We are sitting in one of the few restaurants that is open in the eastern, wealthier part of Caracas.

- MEDIA ALERT: MESSAGE FROM AMERICA: ITN DECLARES WAR ON IRAQ

Unpublished

December 20, 2002 by Paul

From MEDIA LENS: Correcting for the distorted vision of the corporate media Any lingering notions that we have an independent and free media system must surely be evaporating under the vast weight of evidence emerging as the US and Britain manipulate and deceive their way to a war for control of Iraq's oil. Consider tonight's breathtaking report on ITN's Evening News at 6:30. Newsreader Katie Derham began the report on Iraq, declaring: "Saddam Hussein has lied to the United Nations and the world is one step closer to a war with Iraq.

Describing himself as "privileged to have lived a life under our Constitution that has allowed me to dream and prosper," Mr.

December 20, 2002 by Paul

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hundreds of Iranian and other Middle East citizens were in southern California jails on Wednesday after coming forward to comply with a new rule to register with immigration authorities only to wind up handcuffed and behind bars. Shocked and frustrated Islamic and immigrant groups estimate that more than 500 people have been arrested in Los Angeles, neighboring Orange County and San Diego in the past three days under a new nationwide anti-terrorism program. Some unconfirmed reports put the figure as high as 1,000.

- MEDIA ALERT: BBC CHANNELING GOVERNMENT PROPAGANDA

Unpublished

December 20, 2002 by Paul

Last month, of course, there was a constant stream of BBC reports warning of attacks on ferries, tube trains, public events; talk of dirty bombs, of terrorist suspects arrested, of preparations to counter germ warfare attacks, of police snipers being distributed to kill suicide bombers, of fighter jets on permanent standby, of plans for the distribution of radiation pills, of plans to evacuate major cities, and so on, almost on a daily basis. According to a former intelligence officer quoted in the Daily Mirror recently, this is part of a "softening up process," for a war on Iraq, "a lying ga

December 23, 2002 by Paul

How is it that the statements of one single country, the U.S. are more important and newsworthy than what Blix and Baradei themselves have to say -- as the officials in charge of the inspections -- about the matter? As BBC reported earlier, recently the US illegally violated the Security Council's resolution by blocking the non permanent members of the Council from having access to the document Iraq produced. One wonders: how can one criticize this document, when one has worked so hard from letting others see an uncensored copy of the document?

- Japanese Americans Express Solidarity with American Muslims

Unpublished

December 25, 2002 by Paul

Sixty years ago, the Japanese American community was typecast as the enemy through the media and by the policies of the U.S. government. Our community experienced evacuation, detentions, FBI harassment, attacks on our families, and culture, loss of homes and livelihood. We felt isolated, humiliated and some felt ashamed. We see a parallel between the Japanese American concentration camp experience during WW2 and the continuing detentions today of Arab, Muslim and South Asian immigrants without due process. We condemn these attacks.

- Japan Supporting U.S. Invasion of Iraq

Unpublished

December 25, 2002 by Paul

It is time to stop pretending that Japan is on the sidelines in the coming war. Japan's opportunistic Liberal Democratic Party (Ž©—R–¯“}?j leaders, fondly remembering the days of colonialism and the Pacific War that they still pretend was fought to liberate Asia from the Western Imperialists, are now JOINING the Americans in a new imperial war on Iraq. Under the pretense of making an "international contribution" the Japanese will, more than ever before, actually lend a helping hand in killing Iraqi civilians.

On November 11, the Common Council of Syracuse, New York passed a resolution opposing a U.S. led military strike against Iraq. In doing so, Syracuse joined over 30 city councils that have passed similar resolutions. Santa Cruz, Oakland, and Ithaca were the first cities to pass resolutions in October, 2002. Over the next few months, they were followed by others including Seattle, Washington; New Haven, Connecticut; Washington, D.C.; and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Activists in many other cities, such as New York and Chicago, are currently campaigning to convince their councils to pass resolutions.

-Dow sues penniless Bhopal survivors: How low can Dow go?

Unpublished

January 2, 2003 by Paul

Yes that's right - the very people Dow should be helping are now facing a lawsuit from one of the world most powerful corporations. Why are they acting in such an amazingly perverse manner? On December 2nd a peaceful march of 200 women survivors from Bhopal delivered toxic waste from the abandoned Carbide factory back to Dow's Indian headquarters in Bombay with the demand that Dow take responsibility for the disaster and clean up the site. Dow obviously has other ideas because they are suing survivors for about US$10,000 for "loss of work".
