- NY City witholding permit for anti war demo? Demo info here

The NYC authorities are refusing march permits for Feb. 15. Under no circumstances, they say, will there be a march bigger than 10,000 people. Why? Because the police cannot contain it. The following are *excerpts* of notes from Co-chair Leslie Cagan of the United For Peace and Justice Coalition(admin. committee notes.)

a) The NYC Police Dept. informed our lawyers today that they will NOT issue a parade permit for the demonstration. On the call today we all agreed to challenge this decision in court. The New York Civil Liberties Union is representing us and the papers will be filed in the court tomorrow (Thursday).

The police said they would grant us permission to have a rally, but for safety and security reasons they will not give us the permit to march. Our lawyers believe we have a strong case, but certainly there is no guarantee on what the judge will eventually decide. [...]More details on the campaign will be forthcoming very soon. In the meantime it is full steam ahead with the organizing!

b) Below is a complete list of the people presently confirmed to participate in the rally on 2/15, followed by the other categories the program committee wants to include.

- Japan’s crisis management too optimistic

The fact that they operate Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station, in spite of the predicted Tokai Earthquake of magnitude 8, shows crisis management is not fully functioning. We ask the international community to help protest and stop this environmental human catastrophy.

Earthquake is the earth sneezing

Important to know the truth. Even if something we know is strange,Could there be a nuclear disaster worse than Chernobyl?

Tokai earthquake could happen anytime? It is predicted that there will be an earthquake at the base of Mount Fuji, which is said will be 10 times stronger than the great Hanshin-Awaji earthquake.Elevated transport systems such the highway and Shinkansen will collapse, bringing down cars and trains alike. Buildings will fall, causing injuries and death. Many people will also Die from the fires that will spread. People living in coastal areas will be threatened by tidal waves. The lucky ones who survive will be left searching for food and shelter Tokai Earthquakes occur once every 100-150 years and the last Tokai earthquake was 148 years ago so is well overdue. four power plants on the epicenter¡É The government and electrical companies are saying that even if a Tokai earthquake occurs, the power plants won¡Çt be affected.

But, the first power plant was built over 31 years ago, before the Tokai earthquake was researched into, and is now falling apart. The most Recent power plant was built 13 years ago using the latest technology at the time. That technology was later found to be inadequate. Recently disclosed cover-ups of accidents show that vital areas of the Power plant are already unreliable and dangerous. Nowhere in the world has attempted to run a power plant, in such condition, during a big earthquake. Hamaoka is going to be used as the test ground. unprecedented nuclear disaster¡É Earthquakes, tidal waves and eruptions are a natural phenomena of the living world. However, human interference amplifies the effects of such natural disasters. This was shown at the time of the great Hanshin-Awaji earthquake; however, we still haven’s learnt from the past.

The predicted seismic intensity of Tokai earthquakes. The red areas indicate intensities of 6-7 on a nationally recognized scalewhich ranges from 0-7, and the yellow areas indicate intensities of less than 6 (Government figures). Immediate evacuation areas Uninhabitable areas (Russian standard) Uninhabitable areas (Belarus standard) Scattering range of high-risk radioactive contamination. Likely area of epicenter occurrence: Hamaoka nuclear Facility. The 4 nuclear power plants situated on the epicenter of the next great Tokai earthquake are currently in operation. Hamaoka is the only such site in The world.Hamaoka nuclear facility.¡¡ Eurasia and Philippine tectonic plates¡¡ Tokai earthquakes occur when pressure is released from the tectonic plates. The damage caused by the earthquake will be soon reconstructed. However, radiation damage will continue to affect future generations

The Tokai earthquake has been scientifically predicted to take place on An enormous scale. Are we going to permit the re-opening of the power plant? Or make a stand, hand in hand and work together to avoid the disaster? We have the opportunity to unite and protect ourselves from the Tokai earthquake

- Guernica Reproduction Covered at UN

NEW YORK.- The “Guernica” work by Pablo Picasso at the entrance of the Security Council of the United Nations has been covered with a curtain. The reason for covering this work is that this is the place where diplomats make statements to the press and have this work as the background. The Picasso work features the horrors of war. On January 27 a large blue curtain was placed to cover the work.

Fred Eckhard, press secretary of the U.N. said: “It is an appropriate background for the cameras.” He was questioned as to why the work had been covered.

A diplomat stated that it would not be an appropriate background if the ambassador of the United States at the U.N. John Negroponte, or Powell, talk about war surrounded with women, children and animals shouting with horror and showing the suffering of the bombings.

This work is a reproduction of the Guernica that was donated by Nelson A. Rockefeller to the U.N. in 1985.

and apparantly moved

Few of us can easily surrender our belief that society must somehow make sense. The thought that the state has lost its mind and is punishing so many innocent people is intolerable. And so the evidence has to be internally denied.
