-Bush fears outcome of federal report on 9-11

A political battle is brewing over the US federal panel investigating the September 11 terror attacks seeking an extension, as the White House fears that release of the report in the midst of presidential elections might prove an embarrassment to George W. Bush. Facing a May deadline that many members no longer think they can meet, the panel, which has uncovered new evidence of bungling by the federal agencies prior to the terror strikes, is weighing the option of asking Congress for more time to prepare the report.

-Bush Debuting “Patriot II”

- A new bill allows the Federal Bureau of Investigation to investigate the money orders you sent to your family, the items you bought or sold at the pawnshop, and the places you’ve traveled.

And, say privacy advocates, that may not be the worst of it.

On Dec. 13, President George W. Bush signed into law an act giving the FBI dramatically increased domestic surveillance powers. Now, the FBI can - without a judge’s order - go through previously private financial records from numerous businesses. Observers say that this is the beginning of the administration’s push to quietly implement Patriot Act II, a comprehensive wish list of expanded police and spying authority that would build on its October 2001 predecessor, the controversial USA PATRIOT Act.

Since the anti-privacy provisions were—despite the objections of the Senate Judiciary Committee—hidden inside a routine intelligence appropriations bill and faced almost no public scrutiny, members of congress from both parties fear that this is the start of something big—“a stealth enactment of the enormously unpopular ‘Patriot II’ legislation,” according to a statement from Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas).

How does H.R. 2417, the Intelligence Appropriations Act for 2004, violate privacy and due process?...............

Medha Patkar, one of the most famous Indian activists, legendary for her solidarity work with people displaced by big dams in India. She spoke at the morning plenary on January 17th. Patkar went on hunger strikes to protest the Indian government and World Bank actions. Although she is little known outside the US, in India, her fame among activists outweighs that of Arundhati Roy.

-Guantanamo Camp Condemned by British MPS, HR Groups

Jan 12- Over 135 members of the British government will file an amicus brief with the United States Supreme Court on Wednesday in support of the Guantanamo Bay detainees. Human rights groups also criticized the US, accusing it of violating the fundamental human rights of Guantanamo prisoners as Camp Delta starts its third year of operation.

The brief, presented by 85 members of the British parliament and more than 50 lords, is the first of its kind to ever be filed by members of the UK parliament. It contends that holding the 650 detainees at Guantanamo without charging them in a civilian court violates the US Constitution. It also stresses that under the Constitution the Bush Administration is fully accountable for its actions to the courts. Two other cases regarding the Guantanamo Bay detainees are currently under review by the US Supreme Court.

Environment Agency Has Illegal Chemical Contacts

Jan 16 - Several environmental groups yesterday sued the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for illegally taking policy direction from the pesticide industry. The suit, brought by non-profit public interest law firm Earthjustice on behalf of the groups, accuses the EPA of violating the Federal Advisory Committee Act, which prohibits government regulators from taking the advice of committees made up entirely of the industry being regulated.

-Bush’s Self Invite to MLK Memorial Sparks Protest

Jan 16 - President Bush yesterday visited Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s grave while hundreds demonstrated nearby. According to the AP, protesters defied Secret Service efforts to keep them well away from the tomb and moved toward the sidewalk directly across the street from where Bush laid a wreath on Dr. King’s burial site before heading to a $2,000 a plate fundraiser.
