March 5 is Job Security for Foreigners Day 2006

More than 90% of foreign workers in Japan are hired on fixed-term contracts, leaving them vunerable to dismissal or non-renewal. Last year, over 300 people took to the streets in Tokyo to demand a stable work environment, free from illegal dismissals, unpaid wages, or discrimination. Demonstrations also took place in Fukuoka; this year, the action will expand to include Osaka and Hokkaido. To get involved, contact Louis Carlet at carlet-AT-jca.apc.org, or phone 03-3434-0669.

Victim of dismissal, harassment, unpaid holidays and overtime etc? More than 90% of foreign workers in Japan are hired on fixed-term contracts (30% for Japanese workers), a status that offers none of the job security of permanent workers. Lack of security includes one’s contract not being renewed or outright dismissal, even in the middle of the contract etc Join the March 5th Demonstration and help other foreigners fight for: job security for all workers, Japanese and non-Japanese, a better working environment, the right to be paid on time, not to be dismissed, iIncluding non-renewal of contracts without just cause. Meet at Miyashita Koen (park) in Shibuya at 2pm sharp on March 5th (Sunday).

Walk East from Shibuya Station along Meiji Dori toward Harajuku and when you have passed the Tokyu Inn hotel, turn left and you will see the park along the Yamanote line tracks. Bring friends along. All nationalities, ages, races and affiliations welcome. The demonstration should be over by 5pm. Let’s march on March 5th and make a difference!
