WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION MEETING
Good News for Progressive Activists

The lie in the mainstream press is that the U.S. tried to introduce human rights and environmental principles at the Dec. '99 meeting. The reality is that the U.S. government under Clinton, acutely embarrassed by the demonstrations that disrupted the meeting, sought to cover up its true agenda, hoping also to win votes for Vice President Gore in the next presidential race.  The U.S. and the elites from most of the world's trading countries do not care about human rights and the environment if they get in the way of profit. The demonstrations at this meeting helped make many aware of this.
