>> New: Global Article 9 Campaign Letter to the UN Security Council
This letter was sent to all Council members, as they were preparing to
hold a debate on "strengthening collective security and armament
regulation." The letter reiterated that Article 9 of the Japanese
Constitution supplements Article 26 of the UN Charter and called on
governments to regulate armament, reduce worldwide military spending
and reallocate the world’s limited resources to sustainable development
and peace promotion.

Time for New Priorities: Global Call for Action on Military and Social Spending
As the world struggles to understand and react to the unfolding
financial crisis, the International Peace Bureau has drawn up an
important call for action on one of the most important elements in the
world’s economic system, which could make a huge impact on the fate of
the world’s poor: the military sector.

Global Voyage For A Nuclear-Free World – Peace Boat Hibakusha Project
Peace Boat has invited 100 Hibakusha (Atomic Bomb Survivors) of
Hiroshima and Nagasaki to join its three-month global journey around
the world to share their testimonies of the experience of the atomic
bomb with people around the world.
The Global Article 9 Campaign support this project as Hibakusha not
only act as peace and disarmament educators, raising awareness on the
dangers of nuclear weapons and the human costs of war, but also
forcefully add their voices to the call to abolish all nuclear weapons
and create an alternative vision for peace and global stability that
does not rely on force.

New Joint Global Article 9 and Disarmament for Development Campaigns Leaflet
The Global Article 9 Campaign to Abolish War and IPB’s Sustainable
Disarmament for Sustainable Development Programme are both advocating a
shift in resource allocation from the military to sustainable
development and human security. Three years after their launch, the two
campaigns are jointly seeking to develop a global network of
organizations and institutions, which would work together towards the
reallocation of resources spent on the military.
Appeal to Ban Ki-Moon to Disarm to Combat Poverty
As part of Frères des Hommes’ campaign for "Disarmament to Combat
Poverty", a public appeal was sent to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon,
urging him to encourage governments to reduce and redirect 10% of their
military expenditures and arms trade towards financing the Millennium

Peace Not War Japan
Raising awareness about peace

"Culture Is Peace"

Peace Not War Japan (PNWJ) is a Tokyo-based volunteer collective,
working to raise awareness of issues relating to peace, war and
non-violent solutions to conflict.

Started in 2004 and associated with the UK organisation Peace Not War,
PNWJ brings together conscious musicians, artists and other Japanese
groups or organisations that work for peace and social justice, and is
intended to benefit the grassroots peace movement with networks and
donations.

New volunteers are always welcomed (see here for more information).

‘Peace Not War Japan’ – CD now available

This unique collection is the first compilation of contemporary
Japanese peace music and gives Japan its own soundtrack for a place in
the new global peace movement. Released in August 2006 on Dynastic Records,
the music spans many genres and features well-known acts such as Soul
Flower Union, Dry & Heavy, Captain Funk and Ryukyu Underground
alongside independent musicians from across the country.

PNWJ CD Cover

The CD is available online from Amazon.co.jp, TowerRecords.co.jp, and HMV.co.jp, plus many other participating stores (Tower Records, HMV, Tsutaya, Wave, etc – see News page for full list). Sample clips from the collection can be heard here.

Described by Metropolis
magazine as ‘a diverse introduction to the contemporary Japanese music
scene that simultaneously satisfies your ears and conscience’, the CD
also has a charity dimension. Proceeds raised from CD sales will go to
Japanese peace groups, with an emphasis on the grassroots and/or
underfunded, therefore helping the new Japanese peace movement to grow.

‘…rather than being a rare example (in Japan) of a charity album,
this is actually something even more radical – a protest album.’ (Japan Times)

Feed your head and be part of a new wave – ‘Peace Not War Japan’.
