The Other Israel: Blood in the Streets

Blood in the streets
.

Occupation Magazine  October 12,, 2015, and a selection of articles posted on earlier days

Make East Jerusalem the Capital of Palestine
Amira Hass – Haaretz – How did the horse die just as it was getting used to not eating? (…) Twenty steps that will reverse the situation – and be far less painful than the alternative. (…) Delusional? Actually, all this would be far less painful than the destruction of this land and the two peoples who live in it. [bz]

Kitchen knife – Palestinian weapon of despair
Michel Warschawski – AIC – A spree of extra-judicial killings is taking place in Israel today, cheered on by the masses. This spree renders any Palestinian action an act of suicide. (…) A young woman rises one morning, takes a screwdriver and attacks an Israeli, knowing this will almost certainly cost her life. This is the state of despair of a Palestinian population that has lost all illusions concerning the “peace process”. [bz]

On film – Palestinian confronts police, shot to death
Shehab Press Agency – The footage from a security camera shows the whole of the confrontation between a lone knife-wielding Palestinian and numerous Israeli police, ending with his being shot to death. [ak]

The sum of our financial fears: What if the PA collapses?
Danny Rubinstein – Ynet – If the Palestinian rule does fall apart, the political, security and economic burden on Israel`s shoulders will be unbearable (…) Without Israel, the West Bank will soon turn into a second Gaza, with an African-style distress and one of the world`s highest unemployment rates. [bz]

Mother of Palestinian shot dead denied permit to attend son`s funeral
Ma`an – Just one sad story among all what is happening right now but so revealing of the underlying cause [bz].

There will be no peace until Israel’s occupation of Palestine ends
Marwan Barghouti – The Guardian – The current escalation in violence did not start with the killing of two Israeli settlers, it started a long while ago and has been going on for years. Every day Palestinians are killed, wounded, arrested. Every day colonialism advances, the siege on our people in Gaza continues, oppression persists. As many today want us to be overwhelmed by the potential consequences of a new spiral of violence, I will plead, as I did in 2002, to deal with its root causes: the denial of Palestinian freedom. [bz]

Abbas Can’t Control the Lost Generation of Oslo
Amira Hass – Haaretz – One of the assumptions of Israeli and Palestinian intelligence is that those carrying out the lone-wolf attacks are influenced by social media. That’s true, but they are also influenced by video clips, some of which appear on Israeli sites first, depicting the routine violence that Israel directs at Palestinians. Those speaking of incitement are underestimating the influence of Israeli soldiers killing Palestinians civilians. [bz]

Selection of earlier days

Left-wing Israeli protesters participate in a demonstration
Fear and Tension on a Mixed Jewish-Arab Street in Jerusalem`s Old City
Nir Hasson – Haaretz – Palestinian residents of Prophet Street fear it will become a replica of Hebron`s Shuhada Street, which was closed to Arabs following the massacre committed by Baruch Goldstein. dn

Video: Palestinian killed in Jerusalem was not a threat
Allison Deger–Fadi Aloon, 19, had his back to police and was walking away when he was gunned down before dawn last Sunday, a new video published today by Local Call (+972 Magazine’s Hebrew sister-news blog) revealed. dn

incoherence and beyond : dignity under oppression
Nadiah Harhash–Amid the fire and the bloodshed, there remains a need, a serious need to evaluate the situation. Our gains and losses. As there are no gains with bloodshed, it is our losses that we need to evaluate. dn

The right-wing solution for the violence
Dahlia Scheindlin – +972 – The Israeli Right has offered up legislation to deal with stone throwing, supported new settlements, and at times even championed annexation. The result has only led to a worsening security situation.dn

Israel Detained 650 Palestinians since Start of October 2015, Says Detainees Committee
WAFA–RAMALLAH, October 10, 2015 (WAFA) – The Detainees and Ex-Detainees Committee, in a press statement, said that Israel has detained around 650 Palestinians since the beginning of October 2015, including minors, women and the injured, some of whom are still languishing in Israeli hospitals. dn

Stop talking about an intifada: Israel`s occupation must end
Saeb Erekat – Ma`an – To consider what is happening just as a “new wave of violence” mainly overlooks the point that Palestinians have been under a belligerent occupation for decades, that Israel continues with its Apartheid policies and to build illegal settlements on occupied Palestinian land, and that Israel has been aiming to change Palestine`s identity; particularly occupied East Jerusalem. [bz]

Israel still holds all the cards
Noam Sheizaf – +972 – The tragic paradox is that it was the intifadas that led to Israeli concessions (Oslo, the Gaza Disengagement), while the peaceful years resulted in more hardline Israeli positions and the expansion of settlements. The relative quiet on the ground in recent years, enforced by the Palestinian Authority on Israel’s behalf, led Israelis to believe they can enjoy peace and prosperity without ending the occupation.[bz]

Israeli settlers march through Hebron, harassing and attacking Palestinian residents
International Solidarity Movement – IMEMC “On Wednesday night, October 7th 2015, a large group of settlers harassed, insulted and physically assaulted Palestinian residents and internationals in the Tel Rumeida neighbourhood of occupied al- Khalil (Hebron), injuring several people…After marching through the streets loudly chanting, they attacked Palestinians right outside a shop, running towards them and beating them, and hurling rocks at Palestinian youth and internationals documenting these violent assaults. Instead of intervening, Israeli forces watched these attacks happen at first just to point their loaded guns at Palestinians that just a few seconds before were standing in a hail of stones, threatening to shoot.” ca

Israel Closes Jerusalem’s Old City; Jerusalem’s Israeli Mayor Urges Israelis to Carry Weapons
IMEMC News & Agencies – “After Palestinian activists and political factions called for a day of protest against Israeli violations, the Israeli government decided to close Jerusalem, and only allow Palestinian men who are above 50 to pray on Friday at the Al Aqsa mosque.” ca

Why is it so hard for leftists to speak out amid terror attacks?
Haggai Matar – +972 “But at the end of the day it all comes back to the fact that we are in danger of forgetting what we’re fighting for, and what is the nature of that political struggle. The struggle against the occupation — which is first and foremost a struggle against displacement and disenfranchisement, against racism, against a military regime, against separate legal systems based on ethnicity or nationality, against war crimes committed by our country — it is a struggle for our future.” ca

Netanyahu: Government will take steps against Islamic Movement
Barak Ravid – Haaretz “Netanyahu went on: “I will not accept that people say on Facebook ‘it’s a shame Hitler didn’t finish you off.’ I have asked the attorney general to act against incitement from any direction, including among citizens of Israel.”…Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon told the press after Netanyahu’s visit to Samaria that the IDF and Israel Police have been forced to deal with violence from Jews in recent days.” ca for id

Israel’s New Right Wants Blood in the Streets
Chaim Levinson – Haaretz “The pioneers who once led the camp have been pushed aside in favor of the wisdom of the masses, who want an immediate and violent solution. The wheeling-dealing of the right’s leaders in recent years has produced a new layer of opinion that scorns balanced consideration. The meteoric rise of people like Miri Regev and Oren  Hazan reflects the unapologetic, new right.” ca for id

Abbas calls for end to escalating violence
Elior Levy, Reuters – Ynet News “We want to reach a political solution peacefully, and no other solution,” said Abbas. “We want to minimize the risks of destruction and loss that will sprout on all sides in the current situation.” ca for id
