Reports and comments

EU seeks new format to revive Israeli-Palestinian peace talks
AP – Israel Hayom – “Leaving the status quo unchanged is not an option”, says EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini to reporters [bz]

Not so fast: On dismantling Israel’s human rights NGOs
Noam Rabinovich – +972 – Small battles can be waged against the injustices of occupation while simultaneously fighting the bigger war against the occupation itself. A response to ‘The case for dismantling Israel’s human rights organizations.’ [bz]

European Council calls for lifting siege of Gaza
European Council – Reiterating its support for the two state solution the EU expressed concern about “The grave situation in the Gaza Strip, (…) where the humanitarian and socio-economic situation remains dire and called for “a fundamental change of the political, security and economic situation in the Gaza Strip, including the end of the closure and a full opening of the crossing points, while addressing Israel`s legitimate security concerns.” ak

Israeli right-wing party drops bid to have labor law apply in West Bank
Chaim Levinson – Haaretz – Farmers argue they can’t afford to pay Palestinians the wages paid in Israel. This seems to override an attempt of ultra-right former KM Orit Struk to move towards annexation of the West Bank. [bz]

Court denies equal work conditions for Palestinians in West Bank legal no-mans-land
Yonah Jeremy Bob – Jerusalem Post – The High Court of Justice issued a 2007 ruling stating that Palestinians who lived in the West Bank but worked for Israelis in the Givat Ze’ev settlement were entitled to the same work conditions as Israelis. This included pay, vacation days and termination pay. The precedent spurred hopes for the Palestinian workers, and their supporters at Combatants for Peace and the Wac-Maan Workers Advice Center, that the court would adopt a similar position in this case. However, the court said that the industrial zone near Tulkarm, where the factory is situated, falls into a special category because it is part of a joint effort agreed under the Oslo Accords. [bz]

Israeli forces demolish 3 stores in Ithna – Hebron area,
Ma`an – The bulldozers demolished a used goods store belonging to Said Fayiz Isleimiyeh in the western area of the town, and a garage belonging to Marwan Hilmi Tmeizeh in Ithna`s east, the municipality said. Israeli forces also confiscated garbage containers in the demolition site and demolished another store belonging to Hussan Sharawi, claiming it was not licensed. While Idhna`s built-up areas are predominantly classified as Area B under the Oslo Accords, the majority of its surrounding land is classified Area C, where under the Oslo Accord, building permits must be approved – and nearly never are – by the Israeli Civil Administration. [bz]

European lawmakers` meeting with Arab List MKs banned at Knesset
Jack Khoury – Haaretz – MKs Yousef Jabareen and Aida Touma-Suliman were forced to hold their discussion with the delegation outside the Knesset building after the parliament`s speaker, Yuli Edelstein, conditioned the meeting in their own faction’s offices on the presence of the Knesset’s diplomatic adviser. The later meeting with other KMs, among them Edelstein, did not meet such problems. [bz]

EU to Israel: Halt forced population transfers
Ynet – A meeting of EU foreign ministers blasts Israel for what it says are actions that `seriously threaten the two-state solution`, while discussing a new peace push and get more countries involved. The Arab League was presented a detailed plan by the French FM, stipulating the formation of a Palestinian state in the pre-1967 lines. [bz]

The misleading legal arguments that legitimize injustice in the West Bank
Haaretz editorial – The families Israel wants to forcibly dislocate from Sussiya were already expelled in 1986 from a village of caves in which they had lived for more than a century, and which was declared an archeological site. They found refuge in other caves, on lands they owned or held, and over time built homes and animal pens there. (…) Dismantling Palestinian Sussiya would allow the settlement of Sussiya, founded in 1983, to expand its grab of Palestinian lands and create yet another “settlement bloc” to be part of the so-called national consensus. [bz]

Before we storm Capitol Hill
[Former Mossad Chief] Efraim Halevy – Ynet – As Netanyahu tries to muster a majority in US Congress against deal with Iran, it`s important to hold a profound debate in Israel on whether no agreement is preferable to a signed agreement with components that are crucial for Israel`s security. [bz]

Selection of earlier days:

Searching for incitement in Palestinian mosques — harder than you think
Anat Saragusti – +972 – Channel 10 News wanted so badly to prove that Muslim preachers in Israel and the occupied territories use their Ramadan sermons to incite against Jews. Something went wrong along the way [ry]

The case against the Palestinian Return Centre in London
Sarah Marusek, David Miller – Ynet – Palestinian refugees` right to return to their ancestors` homes may be a taboo subject in Israel, but criminalizing any discussion of this right in international arena won`t make issue go away [ry]

Netanyahu prepares war against Obama
Sergio Yahni – AIC – Netanyahu estimates that his current battle against Obama, regardless of its immediate outcome, will cause future American presidents – both Democrat and Republican – to fear confrontation with Israel [ry]

Israel closes TV station on Palestinian identity
Shira Rubin – AlJazeera – Israel has ordered a six-month closure of the PA-funded station, which aimed to feature investigative documentaries [ry]

Analysis: The spirit of Gaza
Hanine Hassan – Al Jazeera – One year after the Gaza Strip`s third war with Israel in less than a decade, the possibility of recovery seems very far away. Residents whose homes and communities were destroyed are now paying the price as they experience long delays in reconstruction. dn

U.S. warns Israel against evicting Palestinians from Susya
Mairav Zonszein – +972 – Although Susya has been under constant threat of destruction for years, the State Department is now warning Israel that any demolitions in this tiny village in the West Bank would be considered a provocation. dn

ICC decision on the Gaza flotilla raid is just the start of Israel’s troubles
Aeyal Gross – Haaretz – The judges sent a clear message that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a hot potato that does not deter the court.. .The ruling sends a warning to anyone who has never taken the court seriously. The ICC dismissed Bensouda’s decision in a way that will leave her no choice but to launch a probe. The original complaint was made to the court by the Comoros Islands, in whose name the ship was registered.dn

Why This Man Supports Iran Deal — Despite Bibi`s Bluster
J.J. Goldberg –  The Forward – “There is no ideal world, and there are no ideal agreements,” says Ami Ayalon, a former director of Israel’s Shin Bet internal security service. “And let me add that there is no ideal Middle East.” dn

With Iran Deal, Israel Turns a Day of Celebration Into a Day of Mourning
Gideon Levy – Information Clearing House “An intelligent Israel, one not brainwashed and angst-ridden, would be happy this week. The day the agreement was reached with Iran should have been a holiday celebrating the prevention of the next war, the worst of them all. When a country claims to face a threat to its survival, what should make it happier than a chance to prevent war? But it turns out that in Israel the very chance to prevent war is a disaster — another Holocaust.” ca

Israeli army investigating Gaza incidents reported on by Breaking the Silence
Gili Cohen – Haaretz “A Military Police investigation has been launched into incidents suspected to constitute rules of war violations during last summer`s Gaza war. The incidents were featured in a Breaking the Silence report about the hostilities…Military does not say which ones it is looking into, but soldiers` testimonies in report include shooting at civilians, destroying property and looting cars.” ca

With Iran threat off the table, Israel should resolve Palestinian issue
Akiva Eldar – Al-Monitor “Netanyahu complains that the agreement with Iran expires after 10 years. It turns out he knows how to think ahead beyond the next elections and to worry about future generations. If he devotes just some of the energy that he has invested in the Iranian matter into the Palestinian issue, in another 10 years Israel will be a far safer, more likable and democratic place.” ca

Gaza Today : Gaza Testimonies
B`Tselem Project – The bombings of the Gaza Strip began a year ago. For hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, last summer’s nightmare has become an ongoing reality. There are now some 100,000 displaced persons in Gaza living with relatives or in rented homes, in tents, or in the ruins of their old homes.-rh

Anti-Arab vigilante group retakes streets of Jerusalem
Roi Yanovsky – Ynet News – The members of Lehava, a self-styled “anti-assimilation” pressure group, often clash with Arabs and left-wing protesters, as they did on Thursday. IMEMC – “Despite orders by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in 2013 to cancel planning tenders for housing units in the settlement of Givat Eitam, planning continued as the land reportedly belonged to a subsidiary of the Jewish National Fund, Israeli watchdog Peace Now reported.” – id

Nuclear deal will usher in an era of Iranian diplomatic engagement
Haggai Matar – +972 – “We must all strive to create a Middle East (and world) free of nuclear weapons. Presently, according to foreign reports, only one country in the Middle East has nuclear weapons: Israel. According to those same reports, its facilities go un-inspected by the international community, and it is not a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty. If we want a nuclear-free Middle East, we must start by looking at ourselves.” – id

Report shows how Israel attempts to mislead the UN against PRC
The Palestinian Return Centre – PNN – ““The European Union, and its member states, should now implement the UN recommendation as a matter of urgency. Palestinian refugees are entitled to the support of the international community and the EU in particular has a key role to play in supporting their rights.”” – id
